Madras HC slams corrupt

In a rare show of anguish, Justice S M Subramaniam of the Madras High Court came down heavily on the corrupt elements in public service, including the judiciary. He called for initiating drastic measures in order to control corruption in various forms.

The scathing attack by the High Court came in the course of hearing of a petition challenging the suspension of a public servant involved in a criminal offence investigated by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing at Erode.

Observing that the common man was facing corruption from his birth to death, Justice Subramaniam added that the corruption in judiciary is the greatest enemy to the Constitution and opined that corrupt judicial officers should be declared as anti-nationals.

"They are anti-nationals because they are obstructing the developmental activities of our great nation," he added.

It augurs well that the 'holier than though' attitude of judiciary which free India has inherited from the British regime is slowly but steadily changing now.

The all- pervading evil of corruption has not only engulfed the judicial officers but also the lower-level staff of the courts. Of late, several employees of courts have been arrested and prosecution for their involvement in graft has been launched.
