Kolkata: The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, described the Delhi riots as an act of planned genocide and blamed the BJP for the violence. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo added that she was deeply saddened by the violence which claimed 46 lives in the national capital.

The West Bengal Chief Minister claimed that the riots were a planned genocide which was later given a communal colour. She accused the BJP which is responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the national capital of having failed in its duty.

The ruling party at the Centre should own responsibility and seek forgiveness she said. Instead, the BJP was saying that it would upstage TMC in West Bengal.

In an oblique reference to BJP leaders Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Varma and Kapil Mishra, Mamata Banerjee wondered why the Modi government did not act against ruling party leaders who gave provocative slogans and incited people. She cited the instance of her own state which acted firmly against BJP workers who raised "goli maaro" slogans. Mamata Banerjee reportedly said that Bengal is not Delhi. However, the West Bengal Chief Minister asked TMC party workers not to take law into their hands.

The West Bengal Chief Minister hit back at the BJP a day after Home Minister Amit Shah's tour of the state in which he criticised her. Amit Shah had also accused Mamata Banerjee and other opposition leaders of carrying out a misinformation campaign against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He clarified that no Indian citizen would be impacted in any way and that no one's citizenship rights would be taken away. Shah predicted that the BJP would be elected to power in West Bengal with a two-thirds majority.
