Mumbai Police Warn Anti-CAA Protesters At Nagpada To Clear Area
Mumbai: Police have warned protesters demonstrating against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) at Nagpada in Central Mumbai for the past two weeks, to clear the area, according to media reports. Mumbai police have also registered a case against the organisers and 300 women who are demonstrating on the road, blocking traffic movement and causing inconvenience to the public.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) assistant commissioner lodged a complaint on Friday evening at the Nagpada police station, following which cops registered a case. According to the BMC official's complaint, the Corporation was not able to carry out construction work in the area as the protesters erected a stage and also put chairs on the road. This in turn, obstructed traffic movement in the area, according to the complaint.
The Mumbai police registered a case under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as section 313, 314 of the BMC Act, in an attempt to take action against the protesters who have been causing inconvenience, according to media reports. The complaint also stated that activists and celebrities have been visiting the scene of protest to express their solidarity, obstructing the smooth movement of traffic.
Large groups of women have been taking part in the protest against the CAA and NRC,on Morland Road at Nagpada, since January 26, on the lines of the protest at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.
