Indian students, mainly from AP and Telangana, stranded at Manila airport waiting for repatriation

New Delhi: YSRCP Rajya Sabha member V Vijaysai Reddy here on Thursday requested minister of external affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to arrange for the immediate repatriation of 70 medical students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states who were stranded in the Philippines capital Manila's airport for the last three days.

Vijayasai Reddy explained to the minister the plight of the Telugu students at Manila airport with no food and water. He said all the students were pursuing medical courses in Manila.

All students from Telugu states reached Manila airport three days ago after the educational institutions there were shut down due to coronavirus. However, as flights from Manila airport had also been stopped, the hapless students are staying at the airport premises, he added Vijayasai Reddy told Jaishankar that they were waiting for help in miserable conditions as food and water was scarce since the airport was closed. They are not even able to travel from the airport to their hostels as the transport system was affected.

Of the 70 students stranded at the Manila airport, 36 were females, who were facing serious inconvenience due to lack of access to toilet facilities and security, the MP said. The students had contacted the Indian Embassy in Manila, which assured measures to help them, he said.

Vijayasai Reddy appealed to the external affairs minister to send a special plane and repatriate the trapped students.

The YSRCP MP said the minister had responded positively and assured that appropriate action would be taken.
