The Union government on Friday stated in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court that there is no need for a CBI probe into the Nizamuddin Markaz religious congregation case. The Centre further stated in its affidavit that the investigation is being conducted as per law on a date to day basis. It also said that it would submit a report in a timebound fashion.

The Centre in its affidavit is further reported to have said that there was no delay or negligence in the matter. It is said to have pointed out that the Markaz authorities were informed and that Tablighi Jamaat functionaries were told to send foreign and local attendees back to their respective places.

The Tablighi Jamaat held a congregation at its headquarters in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi in March. The religious gathering turned into one of the biggest hotspots of the coronavirus pandemic in India at that time.

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police filed 12 fresh charge-sheets against the Tablighi Jamaat and its chief Maulana Saad and his followers in connection with the Nizamuddin Markaz congregation case. All the charge-sheets pertain to foreign nationals and violation of visa norms.

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police is reported to have named more than 900 foreign nationals who have been charged with violating visa rules. The Union Government has also cancelled their visas and has blacklisted them.
