Opposition Stages Walkout Amidst Stormy Scenes In Lok Sabha
Pandemonium reigned in the Lok Sabha as opposition parties raised full-throated slogans against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), before staging a walkout. BJP MP Parvesh Verma moved the customary Motion of Thanks to the Presidential address and provoked the opposition with his remark that they (opposition leaders) are now teaching the ruling party about the Constitution.
Opposition parties were annoyed with the fact that Parvesh Verma, who was pulled up by the Election Commission for his inflammatory remarks, was fielded by the BJP to move the Motion of Thanks to the Presidential Address. Similarly, the ruling party deploying Union Minister of State for Finance, Anurag Thakur to respond to questions in the Lok Sabha.
Members from the opposition benches rose in protest against and amidst noisy scenes, leaders of opposition parties staged a walkout.In particular, the opposition parties targeted ruling party MP Parvesh Verma and Anurag Thakur. When the MoS Finance rose to speak, he was greeted with slogans of "Goli maarna band Karo," ("stop firing bullets")
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdary remarked that the Government "cannot suppress our voices with bullets." Endorsing his views, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor accused Union ministers of inciting violence in Delhi through their provocative statements.
Opposition leaders raised anti-CAA slogans in the house through the morning and later when the House reconvened.
BJP spokesman and Rajya Sabha member, GVL Narasimha Rao, criticised the opposition for stalling Parliament in the name of Shaheen Bagh. GVL demanded that the opposition apologises to the nation for blocking parliament.
