NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the Congress had held a meeting for some self introspection with its highest decision making body. In which the president of the party Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign from the party president post.

At around 11 AM, the Congress president Rahul Gandhi arrived at the AICC headquarters, accompanied by sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was appointed as the UP general secretary before the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will be deliberating over the reasons for the humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections against BJP.

At the meeting, the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh and other members of the party were also present.

Avinash Pande, party general secretary in-charge of Rajasthan had said, "Rahul Gandhi ji has worked hard... it is not any one person who is responsible. We all are collectively responsible."

Leaders like Raj Babbar, who was in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, tweeted on the social networking site of Twitter, "The results are depressing for the Uttar Pradesh Congress. I find myself guilty of not discharging my responsibility in a proper manner," Babbar tweeted in Hindi.

"I will meet the leadership and apprise it of my views. Congratulations to the winners for winning the confidence of the people," he said.

Another state president, Niranjan Patnaik from Odisha, also sent his resignation to Rahul Gandhi by saying, "I have sent my resignation to Congress president (Rahul Gandhi) owning moral responsibility for the party's poor show in both Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the state."

Several veteran leaders also lost their seat, due to the performance of the Congress in other states. Some of these leaders are also former chief ministers such as Sheila Dikshit, Harish Rawat, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and others.

However, as the rumours about Rahul Gandhi being adamant to resign from the post of the Congress president, insiders are said to believe that party members will be rejecting his offer.

In the meeting, there is a possibility for a resolution to be passed that may constitute a committee to do a thorough post mortem of the election results and take necessary measures accordingly for the future.
