In her statement to the police, the woman said the six men first hit her on the head and attacked with a knife on the neck. They then proceeded to pour kerosene and set her on fire, as she was getting into a slump. Some of the nearby passengers came forward to help the victim. The police were called through the helpline 112, but the accused had fled the scene by then.

As per statements from Vikrant Veer, the Unnao Superintendent of Police, three of the six perpetrators have been taken into custody. Search is on for the other three. The assailants earlier had raped her in March 2019 and she had filed an FIR against them. They got out on bail after being in custody for the crime and proceeded to attack the same victim again.
