Showdown Likely In Parliament During PM's Reply To Motion Of Thanks Today

Update: 2020-02-06 10:05 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to speak in the Parliament's Motion of Thanks to the President's address on Thursday, at 12 noon in the Lok Sabha and 5 pm in the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, the opposition is likely to gear up for a major face-off, especially on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Significantly, the Prime Minister, had on Wednesday announced in the Lok Sabha, the setting up of a trust to supervise the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. PM Modi announced that the independent trust constituted by the government had been named 'Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra'.

The Budget Session of the parliament opened on a stormy note with the Congress and other opposition parties attacking the NDA government over CAA and NRC. The Congress, led by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in the Lok Sabha, claimed on Wednesday, that the people of the country are coming out to save the Constitution from the BJP. He also said that the NDA government was forced to step back on the issue in the face of strong protests from people across the country.

In all likelihood, these issues will be raked up by the opposition again during PM's speech in the Parliament today. The Congress and other opposition parties also protested against the BJP and shouted slogans of "Stop shooting the traitors", (in a reference to slogans raised at Union Minister Anurag Thakur's election rally in Delhi).
