SN Shrivastava Appointed Delhi Police Commissioner

New Delhi: The Union government appointed Special Commissioner (Law and Order) SN Shrivastava as the Commissioner of police with affect from March 1. The news agency, ANI, reported the appointment citing Home Ministry sources, on Friday. Shrivastava will take over from the incumbent police commissioner, Amulya Patnaik.

Shrivastava, who was recently appointed as the Special Commissioner (Law and Order), is known to be thoroughly familiar with the national capital. On Thursday, Srivastava had visited several parts of North East Delhi to review the situation in the riot hit areas. He told media persons that the national capital was returning to normalcy and that people were resuming their day-to-day activities.

Delhi has witnessed several incidents of violence in north-eastern areas of the national capital. Multiple violent incidents were reported between Sunday afternoon and early hours of Wednesday. The death toll from the violence has reached 37, while more than 200 have been injured, according to media reports.

The Centre is closely monitoring the situation and has given the mandate to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Wednesday, ensure that law and order is maintained, and normalcy restored. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had on Wednesday, appealed for calm and brotherhood.

Opposition parties, led by the Congress, have criticised the Modi government for the violence in the national capital and have asked for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in several parts in and around the national capital and elsewhere in the country, in view of the Friday prayers.
