Union Minister Babul Supriyo pulled by hair inside West Bengal varsity
Kolkata : Union Minister Babul Supriyo was shown black flags and allegedly heckled by a section of students at Jadavpur University (JU), where he had gone to address a seminar organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) - the student wing of the RSS.
"I did not come here to do politics. But I am saddened by the behaviour of some of the students of the university, the way they have heckled me.
They pulled me by my hair and pushed me," Supriyo, who attended the seminar amid heavy security, told reporters visiting the campus.
Supriyo was initially stopped from entering the campus for around one-and-half hours by members of two Left-leaning organisations - Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) and Students Federation of India - (SFI), who raised slogans 'Babul Supriyo Go Back'.
The BJP leader faced another round of protests while trying to leave the campus around 5 pm. Sources said he is currently held up on the campus, with the protesting students blocking the way to his car.
Describing the behaviour of the agitating students as "absolutely deplorable", he alleged that the protesters were trying to "disturb peace" at the institute by "instigating the students and seminar organisers to create a stampede-like situation".
Supriyo also claimed that the protesting students tried to "provoke him by openly calling themselves naxals".
A section of students and outsiders allegedly having allegiance to the ABVP and armed with sticks set ablaze posters outside the Jadavpur University. They tried to move inside the campus.
To avert any untoward incident, a huge police force was deployed. Governor Jagdeep Dhankar rushed to Jadavpur University amidst the stalemate.
Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das fell ill following the drama on campus and was rushed to a hospital.
The police have not been allowed to enter the campus. The BJP leaders insisted that they won't leave without a police cordon as protests continue by the SFI.
Bengal Governor was also facing protests at the university. He went there to get Babul Supriyo out of the situation but his car was blocked. Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has been left stranded at the gate of Jadavpur Univeristy.
AFSU leader Debraj Debnath, who participated in the protest, asserted that 'fascist forces' will not be allowed on the campus."We will not let the BJP, the RSS and the ABVP to spread their ideology in a liberal institute like Jadavpur University."
