Lucknow: The horrific accident in Auraiya of Uttar Pradesh which claimed the lives of 24 migrant workers in the wee hours of Saturday, acquired political overtones with the opposition slamming the government. Samajwadi Party leader and former chief minister of the state, Akhilesh Yadav described the deaths in the accident as murder.

In a tweet, Akhilesh Yadav described those at the helm of affairs as heartless people who remained silent in spite of knowing everything. The former chief minister of the state said that the news of the migrant workers dying in the accident was deeply shocking. Akhilesh Yadav added that these migrants going home what are the wage-earners of their families. On behalf of the Samajwadi Party, he announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs.1,00,00 per victim.


Bahujan SamajParty (BSP) supremo and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati said that the accident exposed the irresponsible attitude of the government towards migrants. The BSP supremo demanded action against officers who did not fulfil their responsibilities and sought financial assistance to families of those who were killed or injured in this accident. Mayawati expressed her condolences to the bereaved families.

Mayawati also pointed out that on Friday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had stated that labourers who come to Uttar Pradesh or pass through the state will be taken care of. The chief minister had said that officers would make necessary arrangements for their food, transit and shelter. Mayawati added that it is unfortunate that the chief minister's directions are not being taken seriously by officers because of which a big accident occurred in Auraiya.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the gruesome accident at Auraiya as heart-rending and wondered why the government was not making necessary arrangements for the migrant workers to reach home safely. Either the government does not know what is happening with migrants or is indifferent, she added.


Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the IG of Kanpur to submit a report on the cause of the accident immediately. The IG, Mohit Agarwal, inspected the spot of the accident in which 24 migrant workers were killed after two trucks collided with each other.
