Mumbai: A Special Task Force (STF) team from the Uttar Pradesh police arrested Dr Kafeel Khan from Mumbai on Wednesday, according to media reports. Dr Kafeel Khan, a paediatrician from Gorakhpur, was arrested for his inflammatory remarks during an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in Aligarh. The UP police registered an FIR against him under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) of IPC on December 13, 2019.

Dr Kafeel Khan was scheduled to be present at the Mumbai Bagh protests on Thursday.

Taking a cue from the protesters at Shaheen Bagh, women protesters have started a similar indefinite protest which will enter its fourth day on Thursday. The Mumbai group claims to be apolitical and said that they will stage this protest sit-in for as long as is required and have no timebound programme.

Dr Kafeel Khan was in the eye of a major storm following the death of 60 children in the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur in August 2017. The deaths of children were caused by a disruption in oxygen supply due to unpaid electricity bills.

The paediatrician was sacked from his position at the government hospital after the deaths of 40 children in two days and was later arrested. However, a probe instituted by the UP government gave a clean chit to Dr Kafeel Khan in 2019.
