The leader was targeted once he got out of his vehicle to enter the polling booth but was surrounded by a mob of people, allegedly allied with the Trinamool Congress Party. He was beaten up and kicked into the bushes on the side of the road. The video even captured the West Bengal BJP Vice President yelling at the assailants in his defence and running away while the mob chased him. The Election Commission seeks to intervene in the matter.

Speaking about the untoward incident, Joy said that he held TMC "goons" responsible for the act, adding that wounds will heal but the incident is a "clear" sign of the "end of democracy" in West Bengal.
He added that such acts of crime will not demoralize him. "But it will not demoralize me and I will continue to visit all the booths. I have complained to the Election Commission," Majumdar, the vice president of the state unit of the BJP, said.
The Nadia district unit of the TMC said the BJP leader's allegations were baseless and said that the assailants were locals who were angered with him for "vitiating" the poll atmosphere.
Apart from Karimpur, by-polls are underway in Kharagpur Sadar and Kaliaganj Assembly seats. The bypolls saw a turn out of about 30.17 per cent of over seven lakh voters for three Assembly seats till 11 AM.
