We blame Modi for the killing of the CRPF jawans in Pulwama: CRPF jawan Subramanian's mother

Update: 2019-04-12 10:44 IST

V Ganapathy silently prays at his son's grave, as the sun sets over Savalaperi village. The sight of the old man in front of the framed picture of CRPF jawan G Subramanian, the fenced-in grave and induces a sense of tragedy.

It's approximately two months since the 40 CRPF jawans were killed in the Pulwama attack and the body of Subramanian was brought home to Savalaperi in Tuticorin district. The family members are till now in a state of distress.

Marudathaal, Subramanian's mother is yet to come to terms with her son's death. Their elder son gave up his electrician's job in Abu Dhabi and returned back home for the old couple. Krishnaveni, Subramanian's wife is now junior assistant in the state revenue department, an occupation she got after Subramanian's death.

The deep sorrow notwithstanding, the family and the village are gearing up for the Lok Sabha election. They have always made sure to exercise their franchise, voting for the AIADMK in most elections. Brilliantly decorated symbols of numerous parties adorn the walls of small terraced houses and the local tea shop. A poster of Subramanian was put up by the AMMK, "saluting the soldier".

Nevertheless, Ganapathy is yet to recieve any political backing for the construction of a memorial for his son. Bricks, heaps of granite pebbles and sand have been piled up on a one-cent portion of land across the road, coming under Akilandapuram panchayat.

Various party candidates assured to get it done. Nonetheless, neither a brick, pebble has moved, nor the mandatory clearance from the panchayat.

Ganapathy and his family silently fumed in contradiction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strategies and government, as he appealed the Pulwama martyrs to strike a chord with the youth, neglectful of the Election Commission's warnings. There's simmering anger against Modi.

"We blame him, his government for the killing of the CRPF jawans and rising costs," says Subramanian's mother Marudathaal. "He was interested in farming. I wish he had pursued that. He would have still been alive," said Krishnveni.

Moreover, another CRPF jawan, M Periyadurai's hometown happens to be Savalaperi, who was among the personnel who brought down Subramanian's body. R Marithurai, Periyadurai's father is full of activity because of the preparations for his son's marriage after the election, at a Murugan temple in Tiruchendur. "There is lots of anger against Modi. We hold him responsible for the rising costs of every essential item, GST and demonetization," he said.
