Pushkara Sevaks at the service of pilgrims

The 3,500 Pushkar Sevaks, appointed specially by the city police commissioner D Gautam Sawang, are doing yeoman service to the pilgrims visiting the ghats in the city. Drafted from different colleges in the city, the police commissioner had distributed these student volunteers to all the ghats in three shifts.

There are 100 Pushkar Sevaks at every ghat at any point of time in the three shifts from the day one. The task given to them was to assist the senior citizens and physically challenged pilgrims besides keeping an eye on the movement of children at the ghats. Posted at the entry point of the ghats, changing rooms and in the river water go to the rescue of the pilgrims who require some assistance.

They also provide special tags for the children to ensure that they are not missed and restored to the parents if they missed. “It is my first social service, that to great auspicious and prestigious event Krishna Pushkaralu,” said R Prasad, a pushkar sevak from VR Sidhartha Engineering College. “I came from Jalluputtiga village, Kaviti mandal near Ichapuram of Srikakulam district.

I am happy to serve the pilgrims durng Pushkaralu,” he added. Wearing a special uniform also given by the city police commissioner, the Pushkar Sevaks, both boys and girls, stand on the ghats, give instructions to the pilgrims and go to their rescue.
