13th century inscription found at Yanamadala

Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati CEO E Siva Nagi Reddy identified a rare inscription of the 13th century during his visit to Venugopala Swamy temple at Yanamadala village in Guntur district on Tuesday as part of the CCV&A campaign to `Preserve Heritage for Posterity’.

He told newsmen here that Kota kings who were vassals of Kakatiya Ganapathi Deva, ruled the area from 1218 to 1264 with Yanamadala as their capital. Yanamadala flourished during the reign of Kota Betharaju and his wife Ganapamaba who was the sister of Kakatiya queen Rudrama Devi.

Venugopala Swamy and Veerabhadra Swamy temples were built at Yanamadala during the period of Kota kings, which reflect the Kakatiya style of architecture.

The stone bearing the inscription of Kota Betharaju regime was used in the foundation of a wall built at the temple by local people. Hence, the Department of Archaeology should take steps to preserve the rare inscription for posterity, he said.
