The doctors at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Hospitals), Hyderabad performed an innovative procedure to extract a foreign body from the right lung of a patient without surgery.

The foreign body was the tip of a ball point pen and was stuck inside the patient’s lung for the past 14 years. This had led to recurrent respiratory problems like cough and excessive phlegm, along with frequent occurrence of fever and difficulty in breathing.

The patient, Santosh Ku Bansal, a 44-year-old resident of Kesinga, Odisha used to work as a telephone booth operator. Over the years, he patient was prescribed antibiotics, which provided only temporary relief each time.

Commenting on Bansal’s condition and the procedure performed, Dr Ramana Prasad V Velamuru, Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist & Respiratory Intensivist, who led the procedure said, “This was a unique case and procedure was performed under aseptic precautions.

A raw toothed forceps was inserted into the affected region, and the foreign body was sucked out along with the white curdy pus near the lower lobe bronchus. Using the most advanced bronchoscope procedure, the foreign body was removed and the possibility of a major surgery was averted.”
