Youth festival: Chess tourney begins

Eluru: As part of Sankranti Youth Festival, a district-level open chess tournament was inaugurated by Eluru Walkers Association former governor, IVMR Ramamohan Rao, at Kasi Visweswara Kalyana Mandapam here on Friday.

The youth festival has been conducted by DYFI, SFI and AIDWA in the city. The Sankranti Youth Festival invitation committee president, L Venkateswara Rao presided over the inaugural meeting. 

The Walkers Association former governor IVMR Ramamohan Rao, Lions District Cabinet secretary Dr D Subba Rao, Manavata organisation former president Alapati Nageswara Rao, Eluru Vision Lions Club former president V Harikumar, CITU city committee president B Somaiah, DYFI leaders CH Bharath and Chess International rated player D Lakshmana Rao addressed the meeting. They stated that chess would increase children’s intellect. 

“The government should come forward to conduct such competitions during Sankranti to promote sportsmanship.”Dr D Subba Rao and IVMR Mohan Rao played the first game to inaugurate the open chess tournament.
