‘Empowering self is essential for girls’

Vijayawada: “Harassment of women can come from any gender and it is our responsibility to empower ourselves and find ways and means to come up in life,” said G Anitha of Nagarjuna University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication on Thursday.

Anitha was addressing the students and the staff of Maris Stella College (MSC) on the occasion of International Women’s Day organised jointly by MSC and Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of Vijayawada. She requested the girls to be safe in all the aspects and everyone should have spiritual safety, psychological, economic and social safety.

She explained various acts made for safety of women such as Dowry Prohibition Act, Equal Rights Act, Prevention of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. She advised women to get the rights through various cells, including online apps which were provided by the police department and other protection committees.  

IWC district chairperson V Sridevi explained about literacy, community service, teachers training, adult literacy, child development, maternal health care, cancer detection, menstrual hygiene, assistance to sexual workers’ children etc. MSC principal Dr Sr Rekha, Dr Sr Lovely Jacob, Dr Manga Devi, Josephine Sandhya Rani, PV Sridevi, Kanaka Durga, IWC president KL Aneesha, students and staff were present.
