Hundreds join walk for Gundlamotu project

Giddalur: The people who waited for the completion of Gundlamotu project for the last 40 years have joined the 11-km ‘padayatra’ by Bareddy Narayana Reddy, an advocate and native of Venkatapuram, demanding that the government complete Gundlamotu immediately and connect the Telugu Ganga canal to Enumuleru and Sagileru to address the water scarcity of Giddalur town.

After completion of the walkathon from the Gundlamou project in the Nallamala forest to Giddalur tahsildar office, Bareddy Narayana Reddy said that the Gundlamotu project was announced in 1960 and its construction was started in 1975 with a capacity of 0.37 TMC feet storage to provide drinking water to 14 villages. The project was breached in 1979, 1980, 1986 and 1996 but restarted in 2004 but not completed so far, he alleged.

In the ‘Padayatra’ with Narayana Reddy, the Rayalaseema Taguneeti Sadhana Samiti president, Bojja Dasaradharami Reddy, vice-president YN Reddy, Rayalaseema Vidyavantula Vedika member Arun, Gundlamotu Neeti Sangham president J Jaganmohan Reddy, Rayalaseema Vidyavantulavedika co-convener Bhaskar Reddy and other farmers, people from Giddalur and surrounding villages also participated. 

They demanded that the government immediately complete the Gundlamotu project to harvest the rainwater and supply the same to quench the thirst of 14 villages. 

They also advised the government to link Enumuleru and Sagileru to Telugu Ganga canal so that the same quantity of water can be utilised by thirsty Giddalur town. They submitted a representation to the Giddalur Tahsildar P Khadar Vali to forward the same to the concerned officials.
