Vijayawada: In order to create awareness for local surgeons to understand new and advanced techniques in hernia repair and management, the Manipal Hospital organised a workshop here on Sunday.

Manipal Hospitals head Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi said they involved distinguished surgeons to demonstrate their skills by making newer, advanced treatment more accessible to the patients.

Surgical gastroenterologist Surendra Jasti informed that though hernias may not be immediately life threatening, they require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications. He said if left untreated, it may grow and become more complicated. He said an untreated hernia can also put too much pressure on nearby tissues.

He said that through the workshop, surgeons would get access to techniques such as ‘Thorough Laparoscopy’ that revolutionised hernia (inguinal) management and AWR (Anterior Wall Reconstruction) that was playing a pivotal role in the management of ventral hernia.
He said new concepts of treating hernia were evolving that were making surgery less complicated, and thereby giving much needed relief to patients.

He said this workshop focused on selection of Mesh compositions and placement and management of post-operative hernia surgery complications, he added. The doctors lit the lamp before commencing the workshop.Hernia surgeons Pradeep Sharma, Jignesh Gandhi and others were present.
