Guntur General Hospital doctor grilled over refusal to perform surgery

Guntur: Additional Joint Collector M Venkateshwar Rao and the three- member committee  constituted  by the district administration on Tuesday inquired  into a complaint against gynaecologist Dr Chandrasekhar of Guntur General Hospital   for refusing to perform  surgery  on a  patient Sailaja who has been suffering  from fibroid  in  the uterus.

With the incident coming to light, District Collector and GGH Development  Committee Chairman  Kona  Sasidhar ordered an  inquiry by a three- member  committee  led by the Additional Joint collector  Venkateswara Rao.

According to sources, the Additional Joint Collector questioned Dr Chandrasekhar Rao in the  hospital  superintendent’s  chamber at  the GGH in the city and  asked  several  questions and  recorded  his  statements.  

He also questioned the patient  Sailaja  and her  husband Hanumantha Rao. It may be recalled that patient  Sailaja,  who has been suffering from stomach pain,  due  to  fibroid  in  uterus  met  Dr Chandrasekhar  in his hospital for treatment in Guntur city.  He treated her for 18-months, but she did not recover fully though she spent Rs  2 lakh on it.  

Finally, the doctor said there was an urgent need to perform surgery on the patient to remove fibroid in the uterus and demanded Rs.50,000. 
The patient  said that  she could not afford that amount.

As a result, she was refused treat ment and surgery when she came to  GGH for treatment, not knowing that   Dr Chandrasekhar Rao was working in  the GGH. The latter, refused to perform  surgery on  her  and  said that the patient  age was less and it  is not  be possible   to perform  surgery.  
Sailaja's husband Hanumantha Rao met deputy regional medical officer  Dr.Ramesh and complained. Based on his  instructions,  the doctors  performed  surgery on  her.
