AP releases water to Chennai
Amaravati: The state government has given permission to release of 3.33 tmc ft of water for Chennai city during current season from Kandaleru reservoir to Poondi reservoir for the purpose of water supply. Instructions were given on Friday to the chief engineer of NTR Telugu Ganga Project, Tirupati, in this regard.
Chennai region chief engineer requested the AP government to release Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir to Poondi reservoir during the year 2017-18 to meet the drinking water needs of Chennai city immediately.
He said the present storage capacity in the four Chennai city water supply reservoirs is only 46 per cent of the total capacity because of less than average rainfall in the catchment areas during North-east Monsoon.
On account of bifurcation, the agreed 5 tmc ft share of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh is to be apportioned between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states as per AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 by the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB). As per a letter of KRMB, the share of AP comes to 3.33 tmc ft.
