Girl students from Telugu states excel in nursing, teaching
Hyderabad: Girl students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are doing well both in nursing and primary education in the country. Of a total of 3,077 of nursing institutions enlisted for the All-India Survey for Higher Education (AISHE), 2,078 participated in the survey for the academic year 2016-17, according to the statistics from the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). The total enrollment in these nursing institutions was 2.5 lakh out of which 86.4 per cent are female students and only a mere 13.6 per cent male students.
Five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana -- are contributing 58.8 per cent of the total students enrolled in India for nursing. Of this, more than half of the students come from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
In terms of the percentage of the student enrollments in the nursing education, UP has 82.3 per cent, Karnataka 74.5 per cent, as against Andhra Pradesh which has 95 per cent and Telangana 94 per cent.
In terms of overall contribution to the students’ pool of nursing education in the country, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka contribute more than half of the total percentage of students. Besides, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Sikkim too are the other states where girl students dominating the nursing education.
Similarly, out of a total 4,308 teacher-training institutions enlisted for AISHE, 3,155 have participated the survey and the response rated is pegged at 73.2 per cent and the total number of students’ enrollments stood at 2.38 lakh at the all-India level. Even in this, 62 per cent are female students as against 38 per cent male.
Five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana -- covering around 58 per cent of the total students enrolled for teacher-training courses come from Maharashtra with the highest number of students, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
However, of the five top states, Tamil Nadu stood first with the highest female student enrollment of 89.2 per cent in the teacher training course. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh stood in the second and third position with 75.2 per cent and 62.2 per cent of female student enrollments respectively. These enrolled students chose to undergo teachers training course.
The other two states are Uttar Pradesh which has 51.4 per cent and West Bengal with 43.4 per cent female students enrolled in the teachers training course. That apart, trends in most of the states across the country are also showing up with relatively higher female enrollment share. The teachers training course is meant for the appointment of teachers in the primary and upper primary schools across the country in the public and private schools.
