3-day Buddhist fest takes off

Vijayawada: The citizens witnessed a different atmosphere with monks of all ages who took out a rally on Mahatma Gandhi Road on Saturday. They reached the city from various countries, including like South Korea, China, Myanmar, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and even other parts of the state to participate in the three-day Buddhist festival.

They showcased the importance of global peace with Buddha idol in the rally and also preached Sutras of Buddha. The officials, including the district collector, followed them after inaugurating the rally. The monks from all ages took part and highlighted the importance of peace by displaying placards. They drew the attention of citizens with wearing their traditional attire. 

Minister for tourism Bhuma Akhila Priya formally inaugurated the World Peace Buddhist Heritage Festival on Saturday evening. On the occasion, she said that Amaravati city would be capital for not only culture but also world peace. The state has a trail of Buddha period glory and treasure of many heritage sites beautifully decorated, as well as other forts, architectural masterpieces by the past royals and emperors, she said.

The minister said it is important to preserve these magnificent monuments, tombs, stately places reflect the unique art and craftsmanship and culture on this land for the future generations. She said the tourism department plays important role in preserving in Buddhist culture. 

AP Tourism Development Corporation chairman Jayarami Reddy said the importance of world peace would be propagated from Amaravati capital city. Corporation managing director Himanshu Shukla, district collector B Lakshmikantham and several officials were also present in the event.
