11,119 votes polled in steel plant union elections
Visakhapatnam: As many as 11,119 votes were polled in the union elections conducted for Visakhapatnam Steel plant here on Monday. Regional Labour Commissioner (Central) S K Mishra announced that 11,119 votes were polled out of 11,542 voters in Steel plant union elections.
He also added that the employees who are availing long medical leave also exercised their voting right during the union elections. Sixteen polling booths were set up at UKKU sector for employees to exercise their franchise. The ballot boxes were brought to administrative building under tight police protection and counting process was commenced at administrative building, he added.
Steel plant recognised union elections polls were conducted in a peaceful zone, says ACP Ram Mohan. He said section 144 has been clamped in the area to prevent untoward incidents during the elections. He also mentioned that the winners should not celebrate nor conduct rallies and parties on Thursday at steel plant premises.
During election, contestants had arranged special facilities to bring employees who were on medical leave to the polling centre by proving cars from their home to polling booths. Though 12 unions contesting in the election, the main contest is between three parties, CITU, AITUC and INTUC. According to sources, the result will be announced after 1 am on Tuesday.
