Visakhapatnam: Tension prevailed at Andhra University campus on Wednesday after large number of students staged dharna demanding action against the Harshavardhan Block hostel (Science) management after they found lizard in rasam during lunch.

Some students had already consumed rasam by then. As the news spread in the campus, large number of students rushed to the hostel and raised slogans against the management.  Though similar incidents were earlier reported in the hostels, the management is not adopting corrective measures and playing with the students’ lives, they alleged. The quality of the meals in the hostels is not good, they pointed out.

Responding on the incident of lizard found in rasam, hostel warden GVR Babu said that the S1 and S2 hostels were recently renovated during winter holidays and the kitchen was being maintained hygienically with regular cleaning process being carried out.

“However, we will conduct an inquiry into the lizard incident,” he added. Deputy warden of Harshavardhan hostel K Ramesh Babu said that a team of five students from various streams of science department checked the kitchen, along with university officials. Being Wednesday, chicken would be served to the students and 200 students had their lunch and went back to classes.

Someone among the students alleged that lizard was found in Rasam. The students after inspection found that there were no lizards on the kitchen walls.
