Srikakulam: Nuclear power plants (NPP) are not safe and production of power with nuclear needs more investment, said CITU state secretary Ch Narasinga Rao. He launched a campaign against NPP, along with likeminded organisations, here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, he lamented that the government is acquiring lands for the proposed NPP at Kovvada village in Ranastalam mandal in Srikakulam district from the fishermen and others in Kovvada area without following basic procedure.

Rs 2.50 lakh crore is required for production of 6,000 megawatts of power from the proposed NPP and it is not feasible as the state has surplus power, opined Human Rights Forum  (HRF) state vice- president, KV Jagannadha Rao.

Nuclear power is not safe and Kovvada NPP will pose a threat to Kakinada in East Godavari district and Chathrapur in Odisha if any untoward incident takes place, warned Sanjivini Environmental Organization president Kuna Ramam. Later, they collected signatures from the public in Srikakulam city. CPM leaders Ch Tejeswara Rao, B Krishnamurthy and advocates were present.
