Students to come under CCTV surveillance

Vijayawada: The managements of schools and colleges in Krishna district should install CCTV cameras on their premises as police made it mandatory. The district police issued instructions to all the educational institutions in the district on Wednesday.

As per the guidelines, the CCTV cameras should be fixed on the premises of college canteens, hostels, and main entrances and the four corners of school premises. The police has identified majority of the schools have not installed CCTV cameras.

Several untoward incidents like clashes between student groups, ragging incidents, suicides by students are taking place in the educational institutions. The incidents are causing law and order problem too at times. The parents of students are expressing concern over the ongoing incidents. In this backdrop, the police department has taken a decision to bring all the educational institutions under CCTV security scanner.   

The Krishna district police decided to make the educational institutions to establish CCTV cameras in the schools under the Andhra Pradesh Public Safety Enforcement Act, 2013, which says the CCTV cameras should be installed at the locations where the people more than 100 assemble. The police feel the missing and kidnap cases can be tracked effectively from the footage of CCTVs.

The educational institutions were directed to store the CCTV  footage at least for one month. The students also would behave in a disciplined manner due to the establishment of CCTV cameras, the police opined.

Krishna District Superintendent of Police Sarvasresth Tripathi said the education institutions should have responsibility of maintaining CCTV cameras properly. 

He said the district police took initiative to give more protection to the students. He asked the college managements to come forward to cooperate in this regard. The parents also should be aware of movements of students, including their technology usage platforms, he said.
