Woman mandal development officer, son attempt suicide
Kurnool: Kolimigundla mandal development officer (MPDO) Shobha Rani, 52, and her son Jayant, 24, attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide at the collectorate on Monday evening.
The colletorate staff who noticed them in an unconscious state rushed them to Government General Hospital. District collector S Satyanarayana and Zilla Parishad chairman Mallela Rajasekhar Goud visited the hospital and asked the doctors to extend better treatment. Shobha Rani, accompanied by her son, came here to attend a meeting at the collector office.
As the meeting was scheduled in the evening, Sobha Rani and Jayant consumed pesticide brought with them and fell unconscious. The collectorate staff shifted them to Government General Hospital where they were undergoing treatment.
Jayant’s condition is said to be serious while Sobha Rani is out of danger, according to doctors. The reason behind the suicide bid is not known as the duo is not in a position to speak. Shobha Rani’s husband is said to be a social activist.
The staff of Zillah Parishad and the collectorate who knew the MPDO well say she had no pressures from departmental side as far as they knew. They speculate that family problems might be behind the extreme step.
