Guntur: The number of patients admitting in the Government General Hospital (GGH) here with diarrhoea symptoms are on the rise. As many as 60 patients were admitted in the GGH on Friday alone, where 120 patients have already been undergoing treatment.

The officials shifted 20 patients to various corporate hospitals for better treatment after their condition turned serious and 100 more patients were undergoing treatment in government fever hospital here.

It is pathetic to note that due to lack of sufficient number of beds, two patients were allotted a single bed in the GGH. The GGH has opened two special wards for diarrhoea patients.

GGH Regional Medical Officer Dr V Ramesh said, “The number of diarrhoea cases is on rise in GGH. In all, 18o patients were being treated in GGH. Despite pressure and constraints, we are giving the best treatment and we have already opened special wards.”

After diarrhoea claimed 9 lives in the city, over 500 patients suspected of diarrhoea are being admitted in private and corporate hospitals. M Santoshamma, a resident of Anandapeta, said they had consumed drinking water supplied by the municipal corporation. Due to contamination of drinking water, her neighbours got diarrhoea, she said.

“When, I am feeling uneasy in stomach, I am worrying that I too will get diarrhoea,” she said and added we are not getting drinking water for the last two days and purchasing it from local shops. She said that the government should make concrete efforts to improve the sanitised drinking water supply in the city.
