Tirupati: Intensifying their two-week long campaign, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU) students staged a dharna at the main gate of varsity here on Wednesday, demanding the state government to take up the recruitment for filling up the vacant veterinary doctor posts in the state for providing employment to the unemployed veterinary graduates and post graduates.

Speaking on the occasion, student leader Avinash urged the government to upgrade the 500 Rural Livestock Units (RLUs) into veterinary dispensaries and issue notification for posts of 500 veterinary assistant surgeons to work in RLUs.

He also demanded the government to issue necessary order to bar unqualified persons including paramedical vets and Gopala Mitras working in rural areas and acting as veterinarians in RLUs, as they were not eligible to perform the duties of veterinary doctors, as per the guidelines of the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).

Criticising the government for not responding to the student demands, he warned that the students will intensify the stir if the demands are not conceded immediately.
