Heavy rains lash WG district
Eluru: Heavy rain lashed various parts of West Godavari district, giving respite to the people from the scorching sun. However, the rains have created panic among the farmers of maize and chilli in the district.
Eluru witnessed heavy downpour for over one-and-half hours in the afternoon of Saturday. Around 3.00 p.m, the drizzling started and within minutes converted into heavy rain. The low-lying areas and several roads were inundated in the rain waters. The people have to walk on the roads in the knee-deep water at several places. Rains occurred in Chintalapudi, Jeelugumilli, Jangareddigudem and Denduluru areas also.
The untimely rain has caused loss to the chilli and maize farmers. The farmers have kept chilli harvest on fields for drying and the fields were drenched. In addition, the maize produce, which was kept on fields, also drenched at several places in upland areas of Chintalapudi, Jangareddigudem and other villages.
On the other hand, in delta area, the farmers are eagerly waiting for rains to save their crops. Even the officials are not helping the farmers in this regard as crops wither due to non-availability of water.
