Accused of cellphone theft, girl student commits suicide
Nellore: A first year engineering student who was reportedly suspected by other students in connection with theft of a mobile phone committed suicide at the girls’ hostel of Audisankara Engineering College located at Gudur.
Akkupalli Madhavi from Madamala village of Srikalahasti mandal in Chittoor district was studying first year in civil engineering stream and staying in the hostel located on the college campus. Very recently, her roommate lost her mobile phone and she suspected that Madhavi might have stolen it and lodged a complaint with the management.
Based on the complaint, they called her father from the village and reported the matter. They raised a suspicion that Madhavi might have stolen the mobile. Upset over the allegation against her, she decided to end her life.
She committed suicide by hanging herself with chunni to the ventilator in the toilet. Gudur rural police registered a case. Activists from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in front of the college and demanded a detailed probe into the incident.
They alleged that the college management was the culprit in the case as they were supposed to lodge a complaint with the police on the theft. They said some college staff informed her father and enquired about the theft in the presence of the hostel inmates even though there was no evidence.
ABVP divisional secretary Manoj demanded a detailed probe into the incident and sought appropriate action against the college staff members who acted as police.
Chillakur SI Srinivasulu rushed to the spot and assured that they would investigate the case in depth and take action.
Further, another student of the same college attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at the hostel. The student was admitted to a private hospital and he was stated to be in a stable condition.
According to sources, D Penchal Kumar from Kasumur took the extreme step after returning to the hostel from his native village. Inmates of the hostel shifted him to the hospital for treatment.
