Research on group kritis stressed
Tirupati: The former Principal of SSSVC College of Music and Research Centre, Madurai Prof Latha Varma observed that group kriti is the high form of music. She was delivering keynote address at the two-day national seminar on ‘Group Kritis of Different Vaggeyakaras’, organising by Department of Music and Fine Arts of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) here on Tuesday.
Latha Varma recalled that musical trio like Thyagayya, Muthuswamy Deekshitar, and Shyama Sastri have made it a habit of contributing a group of five or nine kritis on any aspect called Pancharatna kritis and Navagraha kritis. Wherever they go, they used to contribute group kritis.
Even, the modern composers also made it a practice of writing group kritis. Making research on these group kritis has to be praised and a seminar on such a topic will be highly useful to those in the music field, she maintained.
Chief guest and SPMVV Rector Prof V Uma stressed the importance of music in human development saying that each aspect in music has its own
importance.
The Dean of Social Sciences Prof DB Krishna Kumari, who presided over the function opined that students should learn various aspects, which are important to write group kritis. The Head of the Department of Music and Fine Arts and seminar coordinator Prof K Saraswathi Vasudev said that they have received 70 research papers for the seminar and each one of it was focused on a different topic.
On this occasion, Prof Latha Varma was felicitated. Faculty Prof Dwaram Lakshmi, Dr Saileswari, Dr U Himabindu, Dr Mini Nirmala, Dr Sajid, Dr Challa Prabhavathi, research Scholars and others have participated.
