Take steps to tackle summer water woes: Mayor to officials

-    Chittoor Mayor K Hemalatha says that city requires 22.5 MLDs water
-    The civic body is able to supply 11.2 MLD
-    She asks the engineers to make use of tankers for water transportation 

Chittoor: In  view  of  the heat wave in the city for the past some days, the Municipal administration should take  effective steps to solve drinking water problem, Chittoor Mayor K Hemalatha gave instructions to civic officials.  She instructed the Municipal Engineer to arrange hired tankers for transporting drinking water. 

Speaking to press persons here on Thursday,  the Mayor has said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had directed the Municipal Commissioner with a road map to tackle the drought conditions in the city. ``Out of 50 divisions in the city, scarcity of drinking water is prevailing in 22 divisions in which 11 divisions are from slums.  

In order to overcome the funds crunch, a special project report was submitted to the Government to sanction at least Rs.125 crore for Chittoor Municipal Corporation” she said. Out of the requirement of 22.5 MLD water to the city , it was possible  for supplying  11.2 MLD water per a day.  The ground water levels had come down giving problems to borewells. 

``There is an absolute need to improve the collection of property tax to meet the expenditure  for various  emergencies like drinking water, power, and sanitation,’’ the Mayor pointed out. Referring on the prevailing controversy on the demolition of houses for expanding  the National Highways, Hemalatha  expressed her concern towards the claims of the poor.  

``It is true that many of  the poor  are losing their houses in the expansion drive which became unwarranted. Chittoor Municipal Commissioner G.Balasubramanyam, Municipal Engineer Subba Rayudu and others were present.
