Laparoscopic unit inaugurated at GIMSR
Visakhapatnam: In order to achieve the dream for women surgeries sans scars launched a laparoscopic surgery unit at obstetrics and gynecology department in GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) here on Thursday.
Inaugurating the laparoscopic surgery unit, Principal of GIMSR Dr SP Rao said that though laparoscopy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in many parts of the world and in India as well, classical open abdominal surgeries are being conducted among women, these open surgeries would leave a large scar on the abdominal wall which is not well appreciated by the women.
Dr Rao informed that for many gynecological procedures, such as removal of an ectopic pregnancy, treatment of endometriosis or ovarian cystectomy, laparoscopy has become the treatment of choice. Compared to open surgery, multiple studies have shown that laparoscopy is safer, less expensive and have a shorter recovery time, he added.
Speaking on this occasion, head of the department of obstetrics Dr T Radha apprised that all types of abdominal surgeries may be performed with minimal scars. She also reiterated that laparoscopic facility at GIMSR is a boon to women in the region.
The trained obstetricians would be able to perform all types of surgeries through the new facility. Since this procedure is minimally invasive, women need not be at hospital for longer duration. The facility would be able to improve and fasten recovery process from surgery, she explained.Medical Superintendent GIMSR Hospital Dr Syama Prasad also present on the occasion.
