AP Govt prefers eco-friendly public transport system for Amaravati

Amaravati: AP Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) is working public transportation system for capital city Amaravati. A workshop was held in CRDA office on Tuesday in which experts from public transport sector participated.

The CRDA Commissioner Ch Sreedhar said infrastructure and road networks were being speeded up in Amaravati and the CRDA is working on appropriate public transport system in Amaravati. The state government wants that eco-friendly and sustainable public transport system has to be given top priority in Amaravati and 100 per cent electric vehicles can be permitted in the city.  

The APCRDA is considering several options for public transport system such as BRTS, light metro, metro, self-guided buses and trams. The CRDA Commissioner opined that multi model public transport system would be needed for the capital city as it would help to reach different areas in city limits. 

He also said they invited suggestions from the experts on various kinds of transport systems that need to be easy to access for cyclists, pedestrians and commuters of other kinds of vehicles.  

He requested them to present their plans on public transport which would help to the government to prepare the final and appropriate transport systems in capital city. The government thinks the travel time between the work place and homes or various destinations in Amaravati should be very minimal. As per the transportation plan, the travelling time must be within 10 to 30 minutes. 

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation conducted feasibility study and submitted a report to the state government in the past. It suggested a metro rail between Vijayawada and Amaravati along with other options.  Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) also made suggestions to the government on the public transport system.

The workshop also discussed other aspects such as transport terminals, local terminals, depots, intelligent transport system and facilities for commuters. APCRDA traffic and transportation principal planner S R Aravind, ADC infrastructure and planning HoD Ganesh, transport head of Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority PRK Murthy, representative of world resource institute Binoy and other experts participated.
