Use press freedom for development of society: BRAU VC

Srikakulam: Press freedom should be used for the development of society and nation as well and journalists should be cautious while reporting on sensitive issues, mooted BR Ambedkar University (BRAU) Vice-Chancellor Kuna Ramji. 

He was the chief guest at the World Press Freedom Day celebrations organised by the students of journalism department of BRAU on the campus at Etcherla on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, he advocated for press freedom but it should be confined for facts while reporting and unbiased journalism. Journalists should be cautious and take necessary steps in reporting sensitive issues like security of the nation, religion, caste and other issues relating to various sections of people, which may affect unity and integrity of the nation, he explained.

Journalism is a responsible profession, active and unbiased reporting can create wonders in democratic country like India, said BRAU Registrar Korupolu Ragubabu. Head of journalism department of Andhra University P Bobby Vardhan explained the need of press freedom.

Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists Federation (APUWJF) state presidents Nalli Dharma Rao and Pedada Parameswara Rao explained the pros and cons of press freedom and how it can be protected through self-made discipline by journalists. Senior journalists were felicitated on the occasion.
