Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to crack whip on violators

Visakhapatnam: Taking a serious note on garbage and plastic dumping into the drains, Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) M Hari Narayanan directed the officials to impose penalties on the violators in the city.

The Commissioner inspected the beach cleaning programme here on Wednesday. During the heavy rains, tonnes of garbage was submerged into the sea and the same was fished out across shore in the city limits. While observing the beach cleaning process, the Commissioner directed the officials to act very tough with the violators.

During his visit, the Commissioner directed the Zone-2 Commissioner Nallanayya and ACP Naidu to impose penalties on Gayatri Estates, MGR Hospitals and Blue Homes Service Apartments which failed to maintain the surroundings clean.

Though the GVMC has been spending huge sums to maintain cleanliness in the  city, at several places, but people are dumping the garbage and plastic waste into the drainages which is creating  a big challenge to the GVMC. The GVMC is deploying men and machinery for desiltation works to ensure a free flow of the drainages.

Meanwhile, the GVMC and in association with the PSUs arranged dust bins and collecting wet and dry garbage. All the shops, establishments and even roadside vendors have been directed to set up dustbins to ensure cleanliness at the surrounding areas. However, at several places individuals, shops and establishments still dumping garbage and plastic waste into the drains.

“Taking several pains, the corporation is striving to transform Visakhapatnam into a beautiful city. As the plastic waste and other waste are being dumped into the drainages, sanitation works became difficult particularly on the beach front. All the officials of public health, sanitary inspectors and other ground- level officials directed to educate the people not to dump the garbage and plastic waste into the drainages.

The sanitary inspectors also directed to impose penal amounts on those who are dumping the garbage openly and into the drainages,” Commissioner M Hari Narayana said.
