According to sources in municipal administration department, though English medium was introduced in high schools four years ago, but Telugu medium classes were also being conducted parallel to the English medium till now to help the students to make transition. But there will be no Telugu medium in municipal schools in future. Students will be issued English medium textbooks by the government from this year.

Officials are of the view that the student strength in the municipal schools will increase if English medium is introduced as poor and middle class families will admit their children, instead of private schools where they have to shell huge amounts.

Speaking to The Hans India, Guntur Municipal Corporation additional commissioner K Ramachandra Reddy said, “We will give admissions to students in English medium only in all the municipal corporation school as directed by the municipal administration minister.

There will be no Telugu medium parallel to English medium. We will conduct campaign for admissions very soon. We have also started advanced foundation course for IIT from Class VI to the merit students in the GMC schools.”

Former MLC of Guntur and Krishna, Guntur teachers constituency K S Lakshamana Rao said the government issued GO No 14 to continue English medium in municipal schools. “Minister P Narayana is trying to introducing corporate education system in the municipal schools.

I am opposing it. There is a need to continue Telugu medium parallel to the English medium. When the government introduced English medium in ZP high schools in 2008, we had opposed it and suggested continuation of Telugu medium parallel to the EM,” he said.
