Sir Munroe birth anniversary celebrated
Anantapur: The 258th birth anniversary celebrations of the first Principal Collector of Anantapur Sir Thomas Munroe was celebrated here on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Additional Joint Collector H Subba Raju lauded Thomas Munroe as the 'People's Collector' who had won the hearts of the people through his pro-people and pro-farmers initiatives.
Next to emperor Sri Krishna Devaraya, Thomas Munroe was instrumental in constructing large number of village tanks and filling them with water to fight against drought conditions. He had served as the Collector during 1800-07.
He undertook massive tree plantation and initiated water conservation measures. Being a British national, he respected Indian culture and gave funds for several temples development, the Additional Joint Collector said. He said that Thomas was widely respected and remembered by people in Rayalaseema districts.
