Nellore: Can a truck or a tractor run on railway track carrying construction material? It may be hard to believe, but it is happening in Nellore district. A few Rajasthani men, who are ferrying material using trucks and tractors for laying a new railway line from Krishnapatnam to Obulavaripali, found a solution to move the material to the site where the working is going on.

Why shouldn’t their trucks and tractors have the wheels of railway wagons and make them roll on the rails to reach the exact place where the material is required to lay the tracks was their premise.  This inquisitiveness paid off with the jugaad idea speeding up the track laying.

What they did was that they simply replaced the tyres with the wheels of the railway wagons by spending Rs 4 to Rs 5 lakh. Now they find it easy to move the construction material to the point where the work is going on.

Now they are moving the gravel, crushed stone, overhead traction cables and other related material in trucks and tractors that are moving effortlessly on the railway track that has already been completed to the point where the working is progressing further.

They also made modifications to the trailer that moves along with the truck which now operates on hydraulic system for unloading the material at the site. Mahadev Construction Company is currently taking up new railway line works at Venkatachalam and they are using these improvised vehicles.

“When we faced the same problem in Rajasthan in the past, someone suggested us to replace tyres with wagon wheels and it worked. Then, we have started using them in Nellore too. It is very convenient to use tractors or trucks fitted with railway wagon wheels for carrying material from one place to another place.

This apart, it has become a great attraction. Villagers come here in droves and watch us as we move the tractors and trucks on the rails,” said Hari Narayan from Rajasthan who is using the vehicles for the railway line laying works.
