Vijayawada: A rare living donor pediatric liver transplant surgery was performed successfully on a seven-year-old girl at Manipal Hospitals.

To give a new lease of life to Ramya, her mother became a saviour by donating a piece of her liver. The marathon surgery took almost 16 hours, said consultant liver transplantation surgeon Renu Kumar.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, the doctor said that Ramya was suffering from ‘Budd Chiari Syndrome’, a rare condition affecting middle-aged females between 20 to 40 years and very rare in children below 12 years.

He said, Ramya was registered in Jeevandhan Cadaveric Programme but in view of rapidly deteriorating clinical condition of the child, mother came forward for Living Donor Liver Donation (LDLD).

After thorough donor evaluation of her mother, she was found to be fit for liver donation, he added.

Post operative recovery was uneventful and now 2 months post transplant both the mother and child are doing well.

Dr Olithselvan, Chief Liver Transplant Division, Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi, Unit Head, and others were present.
