Gender discrimination is rampant in the district and abortions are being performed in the hospitals, as the women are reluctant to carry the female child after the scanning reports.

The main reason is age-old belief that male child will provide  salvation to the family and will be helpful to maintain the family. Second one is financial reasons with the backward area like Kadapa most of the families who struggle for existence feared of their failure in bring up girls.

There are so many instances with some people selling their daughter for ‘Flesh Trade’ due to acute poverty. `` Yes really it is ‘heart breaking fact several families performing such bad practice due to lack of proper financial sources, ” said CPI general secretary G Eswaraiah to the  Hans India.

The third reason is, failure the government mechanism to prevent killing of girl children at foeticide stage. It has been indirectly encouraging private hospitals to perform abortions after sex determination tests in the private scanning centres.

According to the sources there are as many as 125 scanning centres  of which six are one at Rayala Seema Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Kadapa , government hospitals in Proddutur, Rayachoti, Rajampet, Pulivendula and Jammala madugu.

When contacted by Hans India, DM&HO N Uma Sundari said that there was some better improvement witnessing in creasing sex ratio  following the initiative taken by the administration like registering cases against scanning centres responsible for doing illegal abortions, bringing awareness in the parents over necessary of protecting female community,  explaining several  schemes taken up  by the government for girls welfare etc. she said.
