Schools deprived of basic amenities
Vizianagaram: After summer holidays, schools reopened on Tuesday and as usual students faced many problems, including lack of basic amenities. Most of the schools in the district deprived of toilets, drinking water, compound walls and other facilities.
Though every year the government is spending a huge money on these schools, the problems are not being solved. In all, 2,829 schools are running under the management of municipalities, and Zilla Parishads, including primary, upper primary and high schools. The educational department sanctioned 730 additional class rooms, buildings in the schools but only half of them were completed so far.
Students at Kotipam Zilla Parishad High School are forced to sit under the trees to continue their education as there are no enough buildings. Most of the schools did not have kitchen sheds to prepare mid-day meals. Now, cooking agencies, women self- help groups need to face troubles during rainy season to prepare food and to store rice, oil and other essential commodities in those sheds.
S Nagamani, district educational officer, said that they are deploying additional staff to complete pending works. This year they are planning to construct 1,230 class rooms in 540 schools in the district, she said. K Srinivas, student of ZPHS, Thotapalli said: “I have been wearing two pairs of uniforms which were given last year. I am waiting for new uniform this year”.
