Call to treat elders with respect

Visakhapatnam: Senior civil judge and secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Damodara Rao on Friday called upon people to treat elders with dignity and respect.

Addressing a meeting organised by State Pensioners Association here on Friday to mark the World Elders Abuse Awareness Day, Damodara Rao explained the provisions of the Senior Citizens Maintenance Act-2017 and said that awareness should be created among youth and people to help in securing good and safe living conditions to the elderly persons. Majority elders in rural areas are being abused from their kin which was unreported, he added. 

Senior advocate and president, Forum of Legal Professionals, Kuppili Muralidhar said the Central government was bringing legislations to enhance the punishment to offenders, who commit crimes against elders from three months to six months imprisonment. TVS Rao, DD Prasad Rao, Helpage India representatives and DLSAS members Bagadi Tulasi Das and Ponnada Rajarao were also present.

Walk for Elders
As part of expressing solidarity towards the elders, a 3-km walk was held from Kalimatha temple to Yoga village on the beach road led by DLSA secretary S Damodar Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Police Fakerappa and ACP A Narasimha Murthy.
