Monsoons playing hide and seek with farmers
Eluru: With monsoon playing hide and seek, the farming community in West Godavari district is facing crisis period.
The farmers who were elated with early spells of monsoon have been worried about the increasing levels of mercury.
After continuous rain for a few days, the temperature had dropped bringing cheers and relief to the farmers who had started preparations for farm work.
However, the sudden reversal of weather played havoc and sending jitters to the farmer.
Most of the farmers, especially those in agency and drylands have made arrangements for going ahead with sugarcane planting. Now, the severe heat conditions made them worry about their crop.
Even for aqua farming, the changes in weather proved costly. The prawns in aqua ponds were dying because of lack of oxygen.
The farmers caught unawares with the fluctuations in weather conditions. They have been facing severe crisis.
The farmers who expected bumper harvest of prawns have dipped into depression.
A large section of farmers were looking for a miracle in the form of rains to continue with farming activity.
On the other hand, rainwater flooded River Godavari. This water is helping the Krishna delta, which has been receiving drinking as well as irrigation water.
The works in Polavaram project which suffered a jolt with the rains started again. Even works relating to bridges and roads also gained momentum.
At some places farmers have been praying for showers on their lands to continue their agricultural activity.
