Make yoga an integral part of life

Visakhapatnam: GITAM University observed the International Yoga day here on Thursday at the Kodiramamurthy Indoor Stadium in the presence of massive gathering of the university officials, faculty, staff and students. The programme was organised under the supervision of GITAM School of Gandhian Studies Yoga instructors. Yoga enthusiasts reached the stadium in the early hours to join the celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, GITAM Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof K Sivaramakrishna said that yoga is a spiritual discipline based on subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. He called upon the people to devote at least one hour to yoga from their daily routine of 24 hours. He exhorted the people to make yoga an integral part of their lives for a healthy living.

GITAM Dental College and Hospital in association with The Art of Living foundation observed ‘International Day for Yoga’ by organising a workshop on ‘Yoga for stress management’. State coordinator Rani Shivam delivered a lecture which was followed by a demonstration with volunteer Priyanka Vemuri assisting during the session. Students and faculty of the institution participated in the workshop and learnt various yogasanas and breathing techniques for managing stress.

Dr K Sirisha welcomed the gathering and Principal Dr K Gangadhar Prasad felicitated the resource persons. GITAM Institute of Medical Science and Research (GIMSR) also organised a yoga camp on their premises. GIMSR Hospital Superintendent Dr Shyam Prasad, GIMSR Medical College Principal Dr SP Rao and NSS Programme Officer Dr Ramana Rao were present.

Officials, including police in the district, participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations. District revenue officer J Venkata Rao said that practising yoga an hour every day will relive one of tensions. He took part in yoga camp organised at Gurajada Library and stated that even school students should practise yoga to improve their concentration and memory power. JV Murali, revenue divisional officer, said that yoga is the best way to relieve one from stress and tensions. 

The people can lead a healthy life by practising yoga. B Narasinga Rao, Chairman of Jilla Granthalaya Samstha, said that blood pressure and cholesterol can be brought under control with yoga. Yoga can improve stamina, he pointed out. Police also took part in a programme organised at Parade Grounds. Additional Superintendent of Police AV Ramana and other police personnel attended the event and advised the staff to make yoga a part of their life”.
